California Lichen Society

Dedicated to promoting the appreciation, preservation, and study of California lichens.

The California Lichen Society was established as a nonprofit corporation in 1994. It has grown from the original nine founding members, and now includes roughly 200 members worldwide. We are an active group, and have set ourselves the goals of mapping the state’s lichen flora, preserving its endangered species, and enhancing the knowledge and understanding of lichens throughout California and adjacent areas.

Activities of the Society include:

  • Workshops for all levels of expertise

  • Guest lectures

  • Field trips

  • Advancing conservation of lichen

  • General Member meeting and potluck in January

  • Participation in other fungus-related events

The California Lichen Society celebrates the diversity of our members as much as we celebrate the diversity of lichens . Any person interested in the study of lichens is welcome and encouraged to join us in our mission to learn about and engage with lichens. CALS embraces people of all backgrounds and does not tolerate discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, religion or otherwise in our organization. We want to make knowledge and information about lichens as accessible as possible and to continue to build a community of people who share an appreciation for lichens.
