Join us for the second event of the newly forming Midpeninsula Lichen Study Group. On 23 June, 10am to 1pm, Jack Owicki, docent for the MROSD (Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District) will lead us to a ‘lichen rock’ in the Russian Ridge OSP (Open Space Preserve). Park at the CalTrans vista point opposite gate RR01 (get the pdf map for Russian Ridgein the list at http://www.openspac e.org/preserves/). Besides the boulders, there are lots of lichens on trees, and a couple of trail loops through grassland and mixed hardwood forest – in the unlikely event that we run out of lichens to check out on the rocks(!) Bring your lunch and water (it may be a hot day). Please RSVP to Jack Owicki <jack AT owicki DOT com> or call him at 650-855-9918 so we know how many may show up.

This is the report of a project done separately from the California Lichen Society, however it is quite relevant to the work of the CALS Conservation Committee. A reduced version is being prepared for publication in the Bulletin of the California Lichen Society.

Peterson, E. B. 2010 Conservation Assessment with Management Guidelines for Peltigera hydrothyria Miadlikowska & Lutzoni (a.k.a. Hydrothyria venosa J. L. Russell). Report by the California Native Plant Society for the U.S. Forest Service.

PEHYmodel-GIS.zip (view in ESRI ArcGIS Explorer, QGIS, or other GIS software)

Note: Hydrothyria venosa was transferred to the genus Peltigera as P. hydrothyria. More recently, P. hydrothyria was split with the original name being kept for eastern populations while western populations became Peltigera gowardii (Lendemer & O’Brien 2011). The paper that split the two showed genetic evidence that populations in the Sierra/Cascades may be a third lineage… so stay tuned – there may be another name change on the way!

The California Lichen Society’s Conservation Committee (CALSCC) has a preliminary list of species it is interested in. Further information must be gathered for these species prior to any formal action. Committee members are working on many but there is more than we can handle. If you would like to help, we have a number of species open for ‘sponsorship’. Information needs include locations within California, as well as the complete distribution of the species… so if you are not in California yourself, you may still have a lot of fun sponsoring one of these species and it may be useful to providing conservation status for the species in your area. Please contact me if you wish to sponsor a species, as I need to keep track of who is doing what. The sponsorship form is attached as a MSWord2000 document.

As of our meeting in January, 2005, the following species are open for sponsorship and of high interest to us:
(please do not consider inclusion in this list to imply any conservation status – many may prove to be undercollected and common. please also note that there are a number of species not included here because they are already sponsored.)

Like it or not, there are people around who like to have a few ‘trophy collections’. This even includes lichen folks. I have been told of an extremely rare lichen having one of its 3 known populations nearly wiped out by a collector.

Please do not post precise locations of at-risk species here, as this discussion board is public and searchable from google! As the administrator of the site, the one form of censorship I plan to practice will be removal of precise location information for at-risk species when I notice it in posts or if others notify me of them!

If you want to communicate a location to another user of these discussions, you can probably find their email address in the membership list, or even get to their profile by clicking their name at the upper-left of the message. Or, you can leave a post asking them to get back to you. Or, since the lichen community is relatively small, you can probably find their contact information some other way pretty easily.

Thanks,

After our January 05 meeting, we developed the list that is in the attached EXCEL file. I’ve also pasted it in below, but the column formatting is destroyed.

CALS Conservation Committee Lists

This is a set of lists of lichen taxa for which the California Lichen Society’s Conservation Committee is seeking information.
There is no implication that inclusion on this list indicates rarity of the taxon in California until the species is formally accepted
to a numbered list other than list 3 (more information needed)! The black box list is under development through a largely
brainstorming process with rejection of only species clearly known to not appropriately fit a numbered list.

Last update: 16 Jan 2005

contact: Eric Peterson – eric[---]theothersideofthenet.com

n Taxon Date of current placement Sponsor Endemism Coastal Threat History Notes

CALIFORNIA LISTINGS
1A: Presumed Extinct in CA
[none can be placed here before April, 2006]

1B: Rare, Threatened, or Endangered in CA and elsewhere
[none can be placed here before April, 2006]

2: Rare Threatened, or Endangered in CA, more common elsewhere
[none can be placed here before April, 2006]

3: need more info (these have base sponsorship information developed and CALSCC has agreed for them to
proceed, but they await further info for placement on other numbered)
[none can be placed here before Oct, 2005]

4: limited distribution (watch list)
[none can be placed here before April, 2006]

THE BLACK BOX: These are species that have been largely ‘brainstormed’ as worthy of sponsorship. CALSCC has
made only minimal effort to reject species at this point. INCLUSION ON THIS LIST SHALL NOT BE INTERPRETED
AS IMPLYING RARITY OR ANY CONSERVATION STATUS.

About the Preserve: Huckleberry Preserve has a relic plant association similar to vegetation now found on the islands off the Santa Barbara coast. The rocks are of Claremont shale/chert formation that can be seen as hard, brittle bands with soil that has a low poor water holding capacity.

Lichens are found in the bay laurel/oak/chinquapin/manzanita assemblage. There are many Cladonia spp. on the soil. On a visit in May 2010, we saw the following along with numerous others.

Parmelia hygrophila

Parmotrema K+Y medulla = P. perlatum; K- = P. arnoldii

Ramalina farinacea

Hypogymnia physodes

Cladonia chlorophaea group

Cetraria orbata = Tuckermannopsis orbata
